How Many Stools Fit at a Kitchen Island?

Three yellow TA stools with slim black legs lined up along a light wood counter

Divide the length of the seating side of your counter by 61 cm (24 in) and round down. That is how many people can sit comfortably: a 122 cm (4 ft) counter seats 2, and a 183 cm (6 ft) island seats 3.

In a first condo, the island is often where every meal happens, so it is worth knowing the real number before you buy a set of stools. Use the Island Planner to do the math for your own counter. It also gives seat height, room behind the stools and pendant height.

Stools by counter length

Seating length Comfortable, 61 cm (24 in) each Snug, 55 cm (21.7 in) each
91 cm (36 in) 1 1
122 cm (48 in) 2 2
152 cm (60 in) 2 2
168 cm (66 in) 2 3
183 cm (72 in) 3 3
229 cm (90 in) 3 4
244 cm (96 in) 4 4

The snug column is our own tighter setting, below the guideline. It works for kids or a quick coffee, but long dinners will feel cramped.

Where 61 cm comes from

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) planning guidelines allow a knee space 61 cm (24 in) wide for each person at a table or counter. That covers knees and elbows, plus the room to get on and off a stool without bumping your neighbour. NKBA also suggests that space be 38 cm (15 in) deep at a 91 cm (36 in) counter, so the overhang matters as much as the length.

Measure the right length

  • Measure only the part of the counter with knee space under it. A dishwasher, an end panel or a cabinet door that opens on the seating side does not count.
  • Count the open ends. An island with two open ends can sometimes take an extra stool on an end, if the counter overhangs there and that end is at least 61 cm (24 in) wide.
  • On a peninsula, or a counter between two walls, the end seat sits against a wall or cabinet. If your length only just fits the number, take one stool off for elbow room.

How to space the stools

Divide the length by the number of stools to get the distance between stool centres. Then put the end stools half that distance in from each end.

Example: a 183 cm (72 in) island with 3 stools. That is 61 cm (24 in) between centres, with the end stools about 30 cm (12 in) in from each end. With stools 45.5 cm (18 in) wide, about 15 cm (6 in) is left between seats.

Wide stools, or stools with arms, take more room. Measure the stool's widest point and check it against your spacing before you order. Sometimes it means one seat fewer.

Do not forget the room behind

A row of stools needs space behind it too. NKBA suggests at least 81 cm (32 in) from the counter edge to the wall behind if nobody walks past, and more if they do. Our guide to room behind kitchen island stools has the full numbers. Then check what seat height to buy for your counter.

A stool sized for condo counters

The TA Counter Stool is 45.5 cm (18 in) wide with a 65 cm (25.6 in) seat, so three fit along a 183 cm (6 ft) island at the comfortable spacing. It comes in seven seat colours, two are $399, applied at checkout, and it ships free in all 10 provinces.

Want light over the counter too? The Island pairs the stools with a pendant.
